Sarah Johnson is an American in Canada, an ex-pat channelling in the true spirit of Hemingway - which means she drinks a lot, shoots buffalo, and dies in the afternoon. A student of medieval history at McGill University in Montreal, Sarah recently decided to forego a less-than-lucrative career in academia for a less-than-lucrative career in the non-profit, bleeding heart, save-the-whales and feed-the-people world. Her father frequently calls her a "deluded little puppy," to which she replies that he has only himself and Sally Struthers to blame.

Aside from saving the world, Sarah enjoys drinking coffee and sleeping, two often exclusive activities which do much to explain her more schizophrenic attributes. She calls this "character," and evokes Woolf, Van Gogh, and Styron, as if anyone would ever place her among their hallowed ranks. (See previous paragraph, "deluded," etc.)æ

No one has heard of Sarah's favorite book, despite her more evangelical efforts (it's called At Swim-Two-Birds! By Flann O'Brien! It has a Pooka!). She is the only person she knows with friends in Iowa and San Diego, and the only person she knows who thinks Anglo-Saxon abbesses are, like, whoa cool.
