Breaktime
6.30.2001 by JP

I'm putting BLAG on ice for a while.

Oddly enough doing this column was much easier during the school year, probably because I'm a huge slacker. During school I'd put maybe 20 hours a week into school, most likely less than that. Now that it's summer and I've got a job I'm working 40+ hours a week (50 this week) and I really don't have time for the added stress this column causes me. I want to make this column as good as possible but I can't possibly put out anything of high quality in my current state.

Two things have caused my decision, my Penny-Arcade interview and my Webby interview. For my Penny-Arcade interview I had created a hillarious piece where I played the part of "Gabe" the second member of the PA duo. I thought it was pretty good but the real Gabe didn't agree and insisted that I take it down. I agreed to take it down because I have much respect for the guy but that was a huge blow to my enthusiasm, I had spent a portion of my (now) precious free time writing that piece and it was up for less than 8 hours! The second thing that severely demoralized me was my attempted interview with Tiffany Shlain, founder of The Webby Awards. This was to be my first ever telephone interview so I was pretty nervous about the whole thing. I couldn't make the original intervious time/date because I hadn't had time to set up my recording rig (because of work) so I emailed her and rescheduled for a week later. A week later I had my recording setup all uh... set up and I was ready to go. I'd tested the recorder and everything to make sure it was all good, I had my questions in front of me and I was ready to go! I did the interview and it went ok, yes! I rewound the tape and gave it a listen, "ch-ch-ch-wannnnn...." is all I heard. The tape recorder had somehow recorded some sort of a cross between a helicopter and motorcycle. I assure you Ms. Shlain's voice sounds like neither. That was strike two and I was in no mood to wait and see what form strike three would take. I need a break.

I don't know when I'll be back to writing this on a weekly basis but my break could go on as long as till the end of summer holidays. I'll be accepting submissions via email if anyone wants to fill the void for me and I may try to stockpile some interviews while I have time but I won't be posting for at least a few weeks. This "break" applies pretty much only to this column, I'll still be working on TM, attending meetings when I can etc...

Thanks for understanding, I'll be back.
